Day 14..eyes

I am so far behind on this.. but my session today gave me the perfect image for day 14.. now I am one day less behind..hehe

No meat No dairy.. No problem

I have been doing lots of research on the American diet and our ailments.. from small to great. It's amazing how much we lack in research on the recommended food intake and each time they change it we get more and more sick.. more and more over weight..

Well.. I watched "forks over knives" (you can now watch this on netflix). And I am just amazed at the research those doctors have put together.

I am not saying that I will be able to give up dairy completely.. I will however do my best to replace or skip dairy products.. Meat isn't an issue for me.. it has always given me a stomach ache.

So.. here is my lunch today.. have I mentioned that I know how to mix up a mean bean dish..

super simple and makes a fantastic side dish as well.

My Texas caviar

1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
1 can black eyed peas (drained and rinsed)
2 garlic cloves minced
2 avocado's diced
2/3 cups minced fresh cilantro
2/3 cups green onion
1 fresh tomato seeded and diced
1 can corn
1 can peas (I prefer frozen corn and peas.. I just warm them up first than let them cool before adding to the mixture)

add all this to a large mixing bowl

Then your dressing

1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
3/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1 tsp Cumin

mix and then toss into salad.. Enjoy!

When to say thank you.

I have such a hard time with this. I am the kind of mom that uses thank you's often. I feel that our children need to feel appreciated and so I tell them when I am thankful for something they have done for me.

Here is where the problem comes into play. At what point do you stop saying thank you for a job NOT well done. Example #1.. my 11 yr old son was asked to load the already rinsed dishes into the dishwasher. He has been instructed on this chore since he was 7 so he knows very well how to load the dishwasher.. my husband goes into the kitchen and see's that half the dishes were not loaded but the dishwasher was running.. so he stops it and takes a look inside.. yup.. about 3 cups and a couple plates and half the silverware.. he was already back outside playing. So of course dad is torked and calls him back in.. gives him an ear full and makes him complete the job.

This sparked a little fire in me.. and made me stop and take a look at HOW my kids do the things I ask them to. I have a wide range of ages with my kids.. ranging from almost 14.. my oldest.. to 3 yr old twins..my youngest. I think this is what is happening with me.

Early chores years (my 3 and 4 yr olds) are me teaching the kids how to actually do a chore.. so they follow me around and help me.. we do laundry together, wash dishes together, sweep, mop, dust.. all while together.. so the job gets done very well and they are mama's little helpers.

Then they graduate to the mid chore years (6-9 yr olds (with my 9 yr old being on the fence between this stage and the next). This is where I am not instructing them on what to do *please go put your clothes away* and then I usually just follow up after they are done to make sure the job is complete..* double checking to make sure they were put in the proper places* (this is where I think I go WAAAY wrong.

This is where I am going wrong..The do the chores yourself stage..(11-13 yr olds). This is where I expect that my previous 2 stages have done a good job of teaching them the proper way to get things done and they should be able to follow directions and accomplish the task. Only this isn't happening.. they are now leaving chores half done and expecting me to finish the job.

Example #2 was today.. and this just confirmed my suspicions. I had to run to get my girls from preschool. For those that don't know.. I home-school my 3 oldest and my 4 yr old.. my others are in public school as well as the twins for speech therapy. I had just finished cleaning the younger girls very large bedroom and asked my almost 14 yr old to please sweep the floor so that I can quickly mop it when I got back home. I get back from the preschool and find her sitting on the couch reading her book.. go back to mop and after i get started I realize she didn't bother to move anything when she swept to make sure she got everything swept nor did she sweep under the beds (2 bunks). I was mopping over dirt and I realized at this moment.. that I would in NO WAY thank her for the job.. She is plenty capable of doing this small task on her own.. after all.. I am TEACHING my 3 yr olds to sweep properly right now.. she has known how for years now and was just in a hurry to get back to her reading.

So.. From now on I think my children will be FIXING anything they didn't do properly or completely and only than will they get a big Thank you from mama. This will have to start with the mid chore stage and I feel like now I need to bump all my kids back to the mid chore stage.

I hate to be a nag but it is my job to raise adults that can finish a task and finish it properly. I want to raise children that understand a job half done gets NO one anywhere... this is something they will use in their school work, in their jobs and in raising their own families.

Coupon week 9/25-10/1

oh ya.. I am a dork.. and I am super excited about how great I did this week. I usually will do multiple transactions to stock up on items.. however.. to keep your cost down you are better to just do one transaction and slowly build your stock pile while paying very little out of pocket. The one exception of course is if there is a sale on something that you also have coupons for.. and your family uses a lot.. the one thing a family of 11 can go through a LOT is body wash!!!

Walgreens.. I paid 1.39 and I got $25.00 in RR for next week (2 packs W maxi overnight pads, zarbies all natural cough relief night time drink, 2 packs theraflu warming capsuls (the only meds I use when I get a cold...score), 2 razors for my man, 4 packs of mentos up2u gum) and because I was using more coupons then I had items.. I bought 4 heath bars for fillers.. yes.. you only see 2..snicker

CVS had some great deals also.. I paid 2.99.. and got back $3 RR for next week. Not nearly as impressive as it could have been but the one problem with having a $10 RR is that you have to buy enough to fill it.. or you lose out on that money...and someone had bought out the thermacare brand which would have given me more RR back.. and our CVS didn't have the excederin on sale that they were supposed to..STUPID..which would have given me more.. so to fill my $10 I bought the cvs brand training pants and the heat wraps.

Target-I have noticed is very different up here from my sources target's..I couldn't find half the deals they were getting.. which included dove shampoo that our target didn't have on sale.. poo..and I know that I wouldn't miss this stuff if I didn't know it was on sale.. but since I know someone else is out there getting it free.. I WANT IT!! hahaha.. So Target I spent $18 on 13 large bottles of Nivea body wash.. 8 womens and 5 mens.. the mens cost more all together than the womens because my coupon wasn't as good.. BUT.. my man smells good so its worth it..hehe

I am already working on making sure I have the coupons I need for next weeks shopping :)
